Beta Zeta Leading Women: Cheryl Clerico

Cheryl Clerico’s remarkable philanthropy at Oklahoma State University (OSU) highlights her deep commitment to the university and its students, particularly those benefiting from the Clerico Family Foundation Scholarship. As the 2024 Women for OSU Philanthropist of the Year, Cheryl's contributions underscore the importance of mentorship and financial support in shaping the futures of young people.

Alongside her husband, John, Cheryl has donated over $16 million to OSU, including nearly $5 million to fund the Clerico Family Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is unique in that it goes beyond offering financial aid—it is designed to provide personalized guidance and mentorship. Cheryl, John, and their daughter, Diane Deakin, meet with each scholarship recipient twice a year, fostering personal growth and connecting students with networks to help them succeed professionally.

For Cheryl, giving back is a cornerstone of OSU's "Cowboy culture," a value she holds dear. Her deep satisfaction comes from seeing the personal and professional growth of the students she helps. Her inspiration for philanthropy comes from T. Boone Pickens, a legendary OSU benefactor. Her legacy also extends beyond her financial contributions; as a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta, she advocates for the empowerment of young women. Sororities like Kappa Alpha Theta provide personal development, leadership opportunities, networking, and academic support—elements that Cheryl believes are vital for the next generation of women leaders.

In Cheryl's eyes, the true reward of her giving is the lasting impact it has on the lives of students and young women, empowering them to reach their full potential and contribute to the broader community. Her efforts are a testament to the power of philanthropy in transforming lives and creating opportunities for others to thrive.

Cheryl Clerico’s involvement with Kappa Alpha Theta has played a pivotal role in her broader commitment to empowering young women. As a proud member of the sorority, Cheryl understands the immense value of the supportive, growth-focused environment it provides. Through Kappa Alpha Theta, young women are offered opportunities for personal development, leadership, and service—elements that align with Cheryl's core beliefs about fostering confidence and success. The sorority encourages academic achievement, provides resources for career advancement, and instills a deep sense of social responsibility through community service. Cheryl’s continued engagement with the sorority highlights her dedication to creating pathways for women to thrive both in their collegiate years and beyond. By nurturing the next generation of female leaders, Cheryl not only enhances the individual lives of sorority members but also contributes to the broader mission of building strong, capable women who will go on to make a lasting impact in their communities and professions.
